Doulas and Perinatal CHWs in Medicaid: A Learning Series on Leveraging Community-Based Support Services in Medicaid

This project centered on the development of an interactive curriculum presented through a series of web-based learning opportunities.
The program included pre-session activities, guest speakers, and opportunities to engage with experts in community-based doula and perinatal CHW care. The audience included state Medicaid agencies, Medicaid health plans, provider groups, professional associations, and other Medicaid stakeholders.

In 2023, Every Mother Counts and the Institute for Medicaid Innovation released a report detailing findings from the learning series. Key themes and takeaways are organized in groups—Partnerships Between Payers, Clinical Providers, and Community-Based Perinatal Support Workers; Administrative and Operational Supports; Training and Certification; and Workforce Development and Retention—providing a high-level roadmap for program development and implementation.
