History in the Making with GirlTREK
CHAP was honored to join our partners at GirlTREK in Montgomery, Alabama, last month to celebrate their purchase of the historic Black Bricklayers Hall, a building that once served as a base for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and as the epicenter of the Montgomery Bus boycott.
“The input from our CHAP allies during our staff retreat affirmed the transformative power of our mission and widened our aperture about the possibilities for securing investments that will help to extend the life expectancy of Black women. Their contributions of thoughtful questions, honest feedback, and offers of hands-on support were greatly appreciated by the entire team,” said Ayanna Taylor, GirlTREK’s Chief of Staff.
For CHAP Co-Director Raquel Mazon Jeffers, the trip was “simultaneously an immersion in the history of the civil rights movement and an opportunity to dream, together with our Girltrek colleagues, about how to expand their impact.”
In the months ahead, the property now owned by millions of Black women around the globe will become GirlTREK’s Southern Headquarters. And in 2025, the bold next step of GirlTREK’s journey will begin, as they focus on a national movement to increase the life expectancy of Black women across the country by 10 years, in 10 years.
We’re so proud to be part of the GirlTREK community and look forward to continuing to share updates on their essential and transformative work.
